Woman from Shan State Arrested with 30,000 Yaba in Maungdaw

Maungdaw: A woman from Shan State was arrested with 30,000 yaba stimulant tablets in Maungdaw, a border town in western Burma's Arakan State, a police officer reported.

The woman was identified as 60-year-old Daw Khin Cho Win, a resident of Ward No. 9 in Lashore in Shan State. She was arrested by a joint operation of Special Branch and narcotic police in Maungdaw.

"She was arrested in possession of 30,000 yaba stimulants at 8 pm on Wednesday from Kyaw Hotel in Maungdaw. She is now being detained at the Maungdaw police station and was charged under narcotic law section 15 and 19 (A)," said the officer.

An elder from Maungdaw said yaba is being trafficked into Maungdaw mainly from the eastern border via Rangoon with the collusion of local officials.

"Yaba are being trafficked into Maungdaw mainly from the eastern border through Rangoon and the local departmental officials are also widely engaging in this business because it is very profitable here. It seems she was turned into the police by her own syndicate here probably because of some disagreement between them," said the elder.

A local youth also said that yaba is now readily available in Maungdaw as a tablet marked with "WY" at a cost of 3,200 Kyat.

According to sources, yaba is also being trafficked from Maungdaw to Bangladesh through Teknaf on the border and Bangladesh authorities have been seizing the yaba almost every day on the border.
